Vodafone hires bank to sell 3.2% stake in China Mobile

Vodafone is preparing to sell its 3.2 per cent shareholding in China Mobile, in a move that highlights the UK mobile phone group’s determination to dispose of its minority stakes.

The company has appointed Rothschild to supervise the sale of the stake, which is worth almost $6.8bn (€5.3bn) based on the Chinese mobile operator’s share price.

At least some of the proceeds are likely to be returned to shareholders, some of whom have been pressing Vodafone to dispose of its minority stakes.

People familiar with the situation said Rothschild was selecting brokers to facilitate the sale of all or part of Vodafone’s China Mobile stake through a placing with investors. Vodafone has also been examining the possibility of selling its stake to another telecoms group. Vodafone and Rothschild declined to comment, while China Mobile could not be reached.

Vodafone and China Mobile announced a strategic alliance when the UK group bought the 3.2 per cent stake in two tranches in 2000 and 2002 for almost $3.3bn. However, Vodafone’s efforts to influence China Mobile’s technology choices have only had limited success.

China Mobile has overtaken Vodafone to become the world’s largest mobile operator by market capitalisation and subscriber numbers. It has almost 559m customers.

Vittorio Colao, Vodafone’s chief executive, quelled a potentially large scale investor rebellion at the UK group’s annual meeting in July by signalling he was actively looking to sell its minority stakes.

The disposal of the China Mobile stake was always regarded as the most straightforward because the shares are listed in Hong Kong and New York.
