Juniper Networks Inc. said Thursday that it was a target of the same cyber attacks believed to have affected Google Inc. and other companies.
The announcement makes the Sunnyvale, Calif., maker of networking equipment the third company to say publicly that it was targeted since Google announced Tuesday that attackers based in China broke into its computer network and stole some of its intellectual property. Adobe Systems Inc. also said Tuesday that it had been attacked.
In a statement, Juniper said it is 'currently investigating a cyber security incident involving a sophisticated and targeted attack against a number of companies.' A spokeswoman confirmed that Juniper was targeted and that it was the same attack suffered by Google and others.
It is unclear whether the attack was successful; Juniper declined to disclose details of the incident.
Google said Tuesday that its investigation showed that at least 20 other large companies from a wide range of businesses -- including the Internet, finance, technology, media and chemical sectors -- have been similarly targeted. People familiar with the investigation have said 34 companies in all were affected.
A spokesman for Dow Chemical Co. said Thursday that the company had been 'contacted by federal law enforcement agencies regarding cyber attacks,' but declined to say whether it had been attacked or whether the contact was related the incident Google disclosed.
