Maoist protesters show support for Bo before wife’s murder trial

A small group of Maoist protesters gathered near a courthouse in central China yesterday, demonstrating their support for a politician whose fall has disrupted the Communist party’s carefully choreographed leadership transfer this year.

About a dozen men and women from all over China met ahead of the trial of the wife of Bo Xilai, the former Chongqing party secretary whose popular profile has forced the party to manage a delicate political balancing act. Gu Kailai and a Bo family aide, Zhang Xiaojun, stand accused of poisoning Neil Heywood, a British businessman who worked as a fixer for the Bos.

Mr Bo was detained by party investigators in connection with “severe discipline violations”, but has not been charged with any wrongdoing in relation to the alleged murder of Heywood.

The flamboyant politician had used Chongqing as a staging ground for a populist Maoist revival campaign widely seen as a bid for a seat in the next leadership, which the party will pick this year. Mr Bo’s left-leaning policies unnerved many of his party peers in Beijing.

“The capitalist-roaders have taken over this country, and Bo Xilai was going to do something against that,” said Mao Jianghui, a retired teacher from Nanjing. “This [trial] is just part of a conspiracy between the CIA and the party leadership to finish off the Left.”

A young demonstrator, who declined to give his name, said he believed that more protesters would come to the courthouse today, to mark the opening of Ms Gu’s trial. She was arrested in April after Wang Lijun, Chongqing’s former police chief, fled to a US consulate in February with details of the alleged murder of Heywood, who authorities say was poisoned.

Immediately after Mr Bo was suspended from his posts, leftist intellectuals and other supporters spoke up for him and criticised pro-reform officials such as premier Wen Jiabao, seen as one of Mr Bo’s opponents.

Chinese authorities have censored online expressions of support for Mr Bo. Postings by leading members of China’s New Left movement have been regularly deleted on Weibo, the country’s Twitter equivalent. The New Left’s main website, Utopia, has been shut down.

Although Beijing appears to have regained its balance as it finalises the next generation of leaders, some observers argue it will still be difficult to purge Mr Bo without damaging the party’s popular image.
