KIM MEETS CHINESE LEADERSHIP

If the 30-vehicle motorcade that stopped traffic on Beijing's main avenue was anything to go by, North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il arrived in Beijing yesterday for meetings with Chinese leaders.

The motorcade, which included two ambulances and a long line of limousines and sport utility vehicles with tinted glass, made its way to the Diaoyutai state guesthouse in western Beijing where police vehicles prevented the large group of waiting journalists from identifying the occupants of the cars.

Yet, since he was photographed in a northern Chinese city on Monday, it has been an open secret that Mr Kim has been making his way to Beijing, even if the Chinese government and media have been in the awkward position of being unable to confirm his presence.

The foreign ministry said yesterday that it had "no new information" about whether Mr Kim would be visiting China, while most Chinese state media ran stories saying only that South Korean and Japanese media had reported Mr Kim was in China for a visit.

Amid the subterfuge and somewhat surreal style that always accompanies the North Korean leader, his meetings in Beijing come at critical time for the country.

In what is his first trip to China since 2006, analysts said Mr Kim is likely looking to shore up economic and political support from North Korea's closest ally following a bungled currency reform last year which led to high inflation. His visit also comes after the controversy over the sinking in March of a South Korean warship, which Seoul believes was probably the result of a North Korean torpedo attack.

Before arriving in Beijing, Mr Kim's visit took him to Dalian, a port city in the north-east, and to Tianjin, another coastal city near Beijing, both of which are often held up by Chinese officials as models for the sort of urban progress that 30 years of economic reforms have brought China a path they say they have urged North Korea to follow.

In the Chinese version of the popular newspaper Global Times, an official at the international department of the Communist party was quoted as saying that Hu Jintao, China's president, had invited Mr Kim to visit China on a couple of occasions and that Mr Kim had accepted the offer.

South Koreans have been poring over footage of Mr Kim in China, trying to gauge the khaki-clad dictator's health after a suspected stroke in 2008. Some have noted he is dragging one foot and is losing hair, which they suggest are signs of permanent damage from a stroke and kidney ailments.

The visit has exposed the fissures in South Korea's polarised politics, with left-wingers hoping China will coax Mr Kim back to talks on dismantling his nuclear weapons.

Rightwingers criticise Beijing for welcoming the North Korean leader after what they see as the murder of 46 sailors in the warship sinking.
