Ms. Bartz was informed of the decision by Yahoo's board on Tuesday, said this person. Ms. Bartz didn't expect the decision, this person added. Tim Morse, Yahoo's chief financial officer, has been named interim CEO, said this person.
Shares of Yahoo were up more than 6% in after-hours trading following the news, after closing at $12.91, up 4 cents, Tuesday on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
The exit of Ms. Bartz, 62 years old, comes as Yahoo has experienced little turnaround over the past few years. Yahoo, which has some of the most popular online destinations for news, sports, and entertainment, faces numerous challenges, including trouble in its core online-advertising business, rifts with Asian partners, and a steady exodus of executives departures.
The departure of Ms. Bartz, who still had more than a year left on her contract with Yahoo, underlines how much the Internet industry has reordered itself and how difficult it has been for a first-generation Web company to fight back against a fleet of younger competitors. Yahoo has in recent years lost ground to rival Google Inc. and increasingly been marginalized as an Internet property by social network Facebook Inc. and others.
