Lunch with Buffett pays off for potential Berkshire successor

A hedge fund manager who paid more than $5m in charity auctions to have lunch with Warren Buffett has been hired as a potential successor at Berkshire Hathaway.

Ted Weschler, manager of Peninsula Capital Advisors, a Virginia-based hedge fund with $2bn in assets under management, will join in 2012 to manage a $1bn-$3bn slice of Berkshire’s $66bn in equity securities, the company said yesterday. He is the second of three managers to join Berkshire Hathaway’s insurance portfolio.

Mr Weschler, who is not widely known in the fund management community, first came to Berkshire’s attention when he spent more than $5m in charity auctions on lunch with the “Oracle of Omaha”, according to an interview with Mr Buffett in Fortune magazine.

He had also attracted attention as one of two hedge fund managers who helped finance a merger of two airlines, America West and US Airways, in 2005.

Mr Weschler will join Todd Combs, formerly manager of hedge fund Castle Point Capital, who was appointed in 2010, in a trio of managers who will carry on Berkshire’s business of buying large stakes in companies it considers undervalued. Berkshire said it was still looking for a third manager.

This year, the thinking on Mr Buffett’s succession – he is 81 – was thrown into turmoil when David Sokol, a top lieutenant, was found to have bought shares in a company he later recommended to Berkshire. Mr Sokol resigned, and Mr Buffett apologised to shareholders.

Last month Mr Buffett invested $5bn in shares of Bank of America as they fell sharply.

Peninsula, which had just $150m in holdings in 2000, as of June 30 held $508m in DirectTV, a pay-television operator and $65m in Cincinnati Bell, according to a quarterly filing.

The liquidation of Peninsula was announced along with Mr Weschler’s appointment. Shares in DirectTV were off 2 per cent to $40.65.

Berkshire Hathaway’s A-class shares were down 1 per cent on Monday to $101,300.
