Kim Jong-Il's Favorite Luxury Brands

Among the many demographics targeted by luxury-goods purveyors, 'short, pompadoured dictators of destitute countries' probably doesn't rank high on the list.

And yet, it seems Kim Jong-Il of North Korea is a luxury retailer's dream customer.

According to an article in the Chosun Ilbo, 'the Dear Leader' has his suits custom-tailored out of a Scabal cashmere and silk blends that costs $300 a yard (four yards are needed for his suits).

He also favored shoes made by Italian cobbler Moreschi.

'In early 2000, high-ranking North Korean government officials heard a rumor that the Dear Leader wears only Moreschi shoes, so they scoured Moreschi stores whenever they went on overseas trips,' said one North Korean defector said.

For his timepieces, he prefers Omega, which he also gave out to staff. Even his beverage tastes ran on the pricey side. Apparently, he had a thirst for Perrier bottled water and Martell Cognac.

The Dear Leader's favorite car, at least when he is traveling, is the Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard limousine.

According to one defector, Mr. Kim's luxury appetite was so large that his personal expenses soaked up 20% of the nation's budget.

Of course, North Korean defectors always have an interest in painting Mr. Kim in an unflattering light. Since so little is really known about the country or Mr. Kim, such claims are rarely verified. Still, Mr. Kim's luxury tastes, were they known to the general North Korean public (which they won't be) probably wouldn't go down well in a country with per-capital GDP of $1,900, ranked 188th in the world by the CIA. But his personal expenses will come as no surprise to anyone who has followed the eccentric, self-indulging dictator.

His luxury purchases show that underneath that modest Mao suit and missile-launching demeanor lies a true, global luxury consumer.
