Buffett's 2009 Pay: Steady at $175,000

Berkshire Hathway Inc. kept Chairman Warren E. Buffett's total compensation at $175,000 in 2009, in line with the famed investor's relatively modest pay over the years.

Mr. Buffett, No. 3 on the newest Forbes 400 list of the world's richest people, continues to hold a giant stake in the investment company. His 350,000 class-A shares and 75 million class-B shares, valued at more than $49 billion at recent prices, represent a 24.3% stake.

Berkshire's underlying returns have rebounded strongly, helped by its vast stock holdings, but weakness in several economically sensitive operating units have continued to weigh on the bottom line.

In 2009, Berkshire earned $8.1 billion, up from $5 billion a year earlier but down sharply from $13.2 billion in 2007.

In addition to keeping Mr. Buffett's pay steady, the company kept Vice Chairman Charles T. Munger at $100,000. However, Berkshire did raise Chief Financial Officer Marc D. Hamburg's pay 11% to $874,750.

In 4 p.m. New York Stock Exchange composite trading, Berkshire's class-B shares rose 29 cents, or 0.4%, to $82.36 cents. The stock, having split earlier this year, is up more than three-quarters over the past year. Berkshire's class-A shares rose $47 to $123,500.
