Moammar Gadhafi Is Killed

Deposed leader Moammar Gadhafi was killed in the city of his birth as Libyan forces overtook his last remaining stronghold, setting the stage for the country to reinvent itself after a 42-year dictatorship.

Gadhafi was shot and wounded in Sirte and died in an ambulance en route to Misrata, said Misrata Military Council spokesman Fathi Bashagha.

'Gadhafi is dead 100%. I saw his body with my own eyes,' Mr. Bashagha said. 'Gadhafi's death is the best news for Libya. The whole world should rejoice.'

Libyan officials were doing a DNA analysis of what they believe was Gadhafi's body to confirm its identity, according to Mr. Bashagha.

The Misrata council, which has been commanding the fighters leading the two-month siege of Sirte, reported around noon on Thursday that Gadhafi had been caught while their troops were conducting mopping-up operations around the coastal city. Shortly afterward, the council reported that he was dead.

The gains by supporters of Libya's transitional leaders appeared to mark the end of major combat in the eight-month armed uprising, including the possibly imminent end to the international air campaign that helped rebel forces defeat Col. Gadhafi's army.

News of Gadhafi's death sparked jubilant celebrations across Libya, as citizens absorbed the news that the man who ruled over them with an iron fist for most of the nation's modern history was gone.

Yet his death starts a new, uncertain chapter in Libya's revolution and poses fresh challenges to the various powers that have been vying to fill the vacuum left when Gadhafi was driven from the capital, Tripoli, in late August.

These armed militias, religious leaders and regional luminaries face the challenge of setting aside the military tactics that toppled the strongman and don unaccustomed political skills to join interim authorities in the transition from tyranny to democracy.

In a sign of the uncertainty of how Libya's political transition will unfold, Interim Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril spoke to journalists to confirm Gadhafi's death on Thursday, but didn't announce a formal end to the armed conflict or give any detail about a timeline for elections.

U.S. President Barack Obama, speaking at the White House, said he had been informed by the Libyan government of Gadhafi's death. 'Today we can definitively say that the Gadhafi regime has come to an end….One of the world's longest-serving dictators is no more,' he said.

Mr. Obama didn't directly declare Gadhafi to be dead, reflecting a degree of uncertainty after multiple previous reports that anti-Gadhafi fighters had either killed or captured members of the former leader's family.

The pro-Gadhafi, Syria-based Arrai TV station said nothing about the reports of the former Libyan dictator's death. Instead it broadcast patriotic songs glorifying Gadhafi and troops loyal to him.

The Misrata Military Council also reported the death of Gadhafi's son Mutasim Gadhafi.

The military council, which has been commanding the forces fighting in Sirte, also said that Abu Bakr Younis, Gadhafi's longtime minister of defense, was killed.

The chief Pentagon spokesman, Capt. John Kirby, said that there was a successful North Atlantic Treaty Organization airstrike Thursday on a convoy fleeing Sirte. Some news outlets reported that Gadhafi was in the convoy hit by NATO war planes─suggesting Gadhafi was found after fleeing the convoy. But Capt. Kirby said there was'no identification' of who was in the convoy.

Though Western military officials couldn't confirm Gadhafi's death, the path is open for NATO's supreme commander, Adm. James Stavridis, to recommend ending the alliance's air war over the country, said an alliance official. 'Because Sirte has fallen and if it is true that Gadhafi has been killed then it is very likely he will make the recommendation,' the official said.

In France, President Nicolas Sarkozy, an early supporter of Western military action to stop a Gadhafi crackdown on rebels, declared the events to be a 'major step' on the country's path to democracy.

'The liberation of Sirte must mark, in accordance with the commitments made by the National Transitional Council, the beginning of a process, approved by the NTC, that will establish a democratic system in Libya, in which all parties will have a place, and where fundamental freedom will be guaranteed,' he said.

U.K. Prime Minister Cameron said the world should remember Gadhafi's victims and that he was proud of the role Britain had played in bringing about the end of the Gadhafi regime.

The U.K. has been one of the largest contributors to the NATO campaign and Mr. Cameron one of its earliest supporters.
