'The King's Speech' reigned supreme at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards Sunday night, winning four Oscars, including best picture and best actor.
Directed by Tom Hooper, the British historical drama stars actor Colin Firth as King George VI and Geoffrey Rush as his unconventional speech therapist Lionel Logue. Heading into Sunday's ceremony, 'King's Speech' led the competition with 12 nominations.
The ceremony featured few surprise wins, with front runners taking nearly all the major prize categories, including lead actor and actress, director and best picture.
'Inception' matched the four awards taken by 'The King's Speech,' though its wins were all in technical categories, unlike 'The King's Speech,' whose two other wins were for original screenplay and directing. 'True Grit,' which came into the awards with the second-largest number of nominations, 10, was shut out entirely.
Natalie Portman took the best-actress award for her performance as a perfectionist ballerina in Darren Aronofsky's 'Black Swan.' Ms. Portman, now pregnant, cried during her acceptance speech and called Mr. Aronofsky 'a fearless leader, a visionary.'
The telecast was positioned to determine not only if predictions held that 'The King's Speech' would be named best picture, but also if the show's producers and backers could successfully court a new generation of viewers.
The Academy enlisted a pair of attractive young actors, James Franco and Anne Hathaway, to host the ceremony. The field of best-picture nominees, expanded to 10 from five for the second year in a row, included two of 2010's biggest hits: 'Toy Story 3' and 'Inception,' potentially drawing fans of numerous film genres.
The drama 'The Fighter' took home prizes for supporting actor and actress. Melissa Leo won the best supporting actress award.
Christian Bale won the prize for playing an unreliable trainer in 'The Fighter.'
The awards race among major features was led by 'Inception,' thanks to the prizes for cinematography and visual effects, and two sound-related wins'The Social Network' had three awards, while 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Toy Story 3' had two awards apiece. 'Toy Story 3' director Lee Unkrich accepted the animated-feature Oscar. Randy Newman also took the best original song award for 'We Belong Together,' written for the movie.
