Tesco Plans to Quadruple Chinese Sales

Tesco PLC said it aims to quadruple sales in China to £4 billion, or almost $6.5 billion, over the next five years.

With its Chinese operations approaching profitability, the retailer said it aims to more than double its number of hypermarkets in the nation to more than 200, including 50 in Tesco shopping malls by the fiscal year through February 2015.

Tesco─the world's third largest retailer by sales, after the U.S.'s Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and France's Carrefour SA─said Monday that it expects to deliver significant profit in the next five years in China as stores mature and economies of scale are realized.

Tesco's China strategy includes pushing into second- and third-tier cities, such as Qinhuangdao and Fushun, by opening supermarkets in shopping malls. But a dearth of suitable property means the company has had to develop its own shopping malls, branded Lifespace, which include a large Tesco store and space for other retailers and entertainment.

U.K.-based Tesco has opened four Lifespace malls, which attract 600,000 customers a week, and plans to open 50 and have a further 30 under development by fiscal 2015. The company will invest £2 billion in its mall expansion, with a further £3 billion to £4 billion of investment coming from partners.

Sales at Chinese stores open at least a year rose 8.3% in the nine weeks to Oct. 31, the company said. Tesco posted sales of £844 million in China in fiscal 2010. The company doesn't report profit by country but said in October that it had a 'small overall loss' in China in the fiscal first half. Tesco predicted that its Chinese operations will be profitable in the second half.

Asia accounts for around 15% of total sales and 13% of trading profit across the group and is Tesco's fastest-growing region. Asian trading profit, which excludes property gains and other items, rose 30% to £228 million in the fiscal first half.
