The horror movie “Saw 3D” topped all films at the weekend box office.
“Saw 3D” (Lionsgate) took in $24.2 million according to early estimates from Hollywood.com. Final numbers are due out Monday.
“Paranormal Activity 2″ (Paramount) took the second spot with $16.5 million.
“Red” (Summit) with Bruce Willis, placed third with $10.8 million.
“Jackass 3-D” (Paramount) placed fourth with $8.4 million, and Clint Eastwood's “Hereafter” (Warner Bros.) was fifth with $6.3 million.
The box office success of “Saw 3D” may have had more to do with the extra dimension than the movie itself. 92% of the weekend grosses from “Saw 3D” came from theaters that showed the film in 3-D.
Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office division of Hollywood.com, said in an email that “The fact that ‘Saw 3D' opened about $10 million stronger than its predecessor proves that for genre films like ‘Jackass' and now ‘Saw,' 3D is experiencing a mini-revival among younger audiences who are enjoying the over-the-top use of the technology and don't mind paying the extra cash for the experience.”
