Liberal economist and Nobel prize winner Joseph Stiglitz was in Hong Kong Thursday and gave his support to the recently passed minimum wage, a first for the supposed bastion of market freedom.
'It's an important part of making a market economy work well,' he said.
'Minimum wages are an important instrument of government policy to maintain the economic well-being of citizens and enable the people at the bottom to maintain their livelihood,' he said. The new Hong Kong regulation will establish a floor on wages at 28 Hong Kong dollars an hour ($3.61).
Stiglitz recalled supporting the lifting of the minimum wage in the U.S. when he was on President Bill Clinton's Council of Economic Advisors in the early 1990s. 'The evidence in the U.S. was overwhelming that the minimum wage could have a positive effect on both the economy and people at the bottom,' he said.
Stiglitz was speaking at Mipim Asia, a real estate conference.
